Researcher (with Responsibility for Outreach)

Carried our website maintenance and held responsibility for creating and collating outreach materials for an EU-funded project called "Scaling-up SuperLubricity into Persistence" (or SSLiP). I designed many outreach materials including print media (e.g. posters and leaflets) for a range of audiences and LEGO™ models that demonstrate tribological phenomena in a tangible way.

PhD in Engineering

The label of "PhD in Engineering" comes from the faculty I worked in. A better umbrella-term for my work is applied mathematics. My thesis is titled "Decay behaviour, escape rates and state transitions in simple models for complex systems" and can be found here. This involved applying mathematical principles and modelling methods to two different systems: nanotribological phenomena of atomically thin layered materials and drug resistance in chronic myeloid leukaemia treatment. As par for the course of completing my PhD, I attended conferences and published three papers (details of which can be found on my science page). After presenting at conferences, I frequently received praise for the high level of pedagogy and quality of animations in my presentations.

MSc in Radiometrics: Instrumentation and Modelling – Distinction

This course covered the theoretical basics of ionising radiation (its production and detection); the set-up, calibration and use of detector systems; and the creation of models of detector set-ups, which were then validated through practical experiment.
I took a particular interest in the human factors of ionising radiation and chose this as the topic of my dissertation. This focussed on the importance and creation of risk assessments. For my project I created a successful model of a novel mobile compton camera using Geant4 and collected data to validate the model.
Along with Geant4, I also became skilled in modelling using MATLAB and MCNP, and collected data using ProSpect and Maestro software.

Postgraduate certificate in Education in Physics with Maths – Pass with Merit

I gained experience teaching Key Stage 3 and GCSE science and maths in several schools in the Greater Manchester area. This built a strong foundation for my skills for planning and delivering high quality lessons. As well as real practical experience teaching, I studied pedagogical topics relating to my practice and produced several literature reviews and reports of the theoretical foundations of teaching. I achieved qualified teacher status (QTS).

BSc(Hons) in Physics – 2:2

During my time at the University of Manchester, I chose to study a general overview of physics and its applications. The option topics I selected included theoretical topics, such as random processes; applied topics, such as biophysics; and more creative topics, such as science fiction and film. I also carried out practical work and produced a dissertation on the application of materials with a negative refractive index as invisibility cloaks. Alongside my academic studies, I was elected social secretary for the Physics Society for the period of Spring 2011 to Spring 2012. In this role, I planned and made promotional materials for events; mentored other students; and communicated with department staff.
